Want a way to introduce your students to the Winter Olympics? Here's a four lesson unit I created to use with my 3rd-5th graders. It includes slides, worksheets, and a student-friendly research website with multiple videos and links for each sport.
A quick rundown:
Week 1: Learn a bit about this year's games & match icons to their sport with a write the room.
Week 2: Short video intros for each sport, followed by sport selection and beginning research.
Week 3: Research completion and app sandbox time with the app/site you'll use to create infographics.
Week 4: Infographic definition and purpose intro, then infographic creation! (There is one missing example I'll add soon)
One of my main goals in creating this unit was to give student real-world experience navigating websites to find the information they want. In weeks 2 and 3 they are tasked with maneuvering around both the official Olympics website and the NBC Olympics website.
If you'd rather view the whole Google folder at once, it can be found here:
I share all my lesson materials as links that allow you to view the file before copying. If you'd like your own, head to File-->Make a Copy.
Four years ago I had students use Adobe Express for this project. The template still exists and I have it linked in the slides if you want it; however, I am extremely opposed to the generative AI presently promoted/used/exalted on their app. We will be using Google Slides and finding copyright friendly images.
Maybe you love the Winter Olympics like I do and would like to share the excitement with your students!
